12 years of slave film poster analysis

On the poster there is only one main vocal point , the large photo of the man. This indicates that he is the main character and the most significant part of the film. He seems to be running the in the photo which suggests that he is running away from someone or something. The clothes he is wearing make him seem vulnerable due to the dirty looking shirt and plain trousers

The white background makes the photo stand out even more and the contrast between his skin colour and white background suggests that  his skin colour is important to his role in the film. Due to brightness of the background it looks as if a light is shining on him also suggesting that he is the main character.

The name of the film is in a very fine and delicate font and isn't made to stand out too much. The font looks very old fashioned looking which suggest that the story is based in the past. The ’12’ is in a different font and colour , this has been done to stand out against the dull background. The names of the cast and crew are in very little writing so the main vocal point is still the photo. However these names have been put on the poster because they are unique selling points as the cast is made up of a lot if very famous actors including Benedict Cumber batch and Brad Pitt. In very small writing underneath the title is stated that the film is based on the true story of Solomon Northup – knowing it’s a true story will draw people in because people will have more sympathy for the characters knowing that real people have gone through this. Over the past 5 years or so films based on slavery and racism have become very popular this means that this genre of film is a unique selling point.
The genre is conveyed through the use of the font ,title and the characters costume. The old fashioned clothing and font show that it’s a period drama but also the name of the film also suggest the time in which the film was set due to the word used ‘Slave’ which isn't normally discussed in modern age.

James Bond Golden Eye Film Poster

The main vocal point of the poster is the gun and fire suggesting the genre of the film is action. The flames and gun indicate danger and excitement. The man is clearly the protagonist as he is in the middle of the poster and is larger than the two women either side of him.

The two different colours of the background ,the black behind the character suggests that the colour mirrors the dark mood and experiences of the three characters. The women on the left looks as if she is more innocent due to the colour of her top which is pale colour which connotes pureness and youthfulness.  The women on the right is wearing a low cut black top suggesting that she is the villain and sex symbol.

The font used on the title is bold making it eye-catching to the audience. The gold colour suggests that the film is glamorous and saphisticated. The ring around the titles also connotes wealth. Under the title of the film there is a slogan which says ‘no time.no fears.no substitutes.” this gives us an idea of what the protagonist is like and his morals.

Behind the two women there are some digital readings which look like a map this connotes that the film is based round an adventure.

The protagonist holding a gun suggests that he has high importance because legally not everyone is allowed guns, this helps the audience work out the plot of the movie.

James Bond SkyFall Film Poster

Font
The font used for the title of the movie very simple and plain , again this shows the sophistication and class of the movie. However the font has a slight distressed looked also providing the audience with an idea of the storyline which continues throughout all the James Bond films. The “007” which is in a different font and colour stands out which is the only thing which suggests that this movie poster is for the new James Bond movie.
Setting
Behind Daniel Craig the city of London is in the background, being one of the most well known cities in the world helps bring in a wide audience from around the globe. It also well known that the Americans ,one of the largest audiences, are very big fans of the British life style and London.
Props
The car which Daniel Craig is leaning on is the very traditional Austin Martin , this shows the heritage of the movies helping to bring audience from all ages. Although the poster is in black and white you can faintly tell that the car is silver which shows the sophistication of the movie and the main character.
In the hand of Daniel Craig is a gun which has been shown in a very subtle way , showing that the film is in the action genre. Although they are clearly trying to get people to focus on the unique selling point the location and Actor.
Colour
The whole poster is in black and white which shows the heritage of the James Bond series but also suggests the mood of the film, the struggles , death and misery. Although there is a slight glimpse of silver on the car and font which shows the fortune of the character and the business he is in.
The dim cloudy setting also in black and white may reflect the story line but is stereo-typical of London weather.
 Institutional information
The institution information has traditionally been put at the bottom of the poster in very small writing , this is done so its not the vocal point of the poster but is also readable to show recognition to the crew.
